Careers at Austin Micro School

Teach at Austin Micro School

Austin Micro School builds Young Leaders through strong academics and hands-on learning. We're looking for people who enjoy working closely with students and want to help each one grow.

Why work here

What makes Austin Micro different

Small, mixed-age groups

Groups are small, so you get to know each student well. Older students help younger ones, and you see children grow over several years.

Room to teach

About a third of the day is unscheduled. You have time to give a student their next lesson when they're ready, and to check in afterward.

No homework, bells, or letter grades

Students show what they've mastered. Families get plain-language reports about what their child can do and what comes next.

Part of a team

Students learn from guides, mentors, specialists, community partners, and families. You work alongside all of them.

How we work

Four steps we repeat every day

Everyone who teaches here, in every program, works in the same four steps.

Observe

Watch students as they work, so you can see who is ready for a new lesson.

Prepare

Set up the materials and the space, and know the lesson well before you teach it.

Present

Teach the lesson to the whole group, a small group, or one student. Then give students time to practice on their own.

Record

Write down what you taught and what each student has mastered. Your notes tell you what to teach next.

Mentor

With adolescents, there's a fifth step. Expect each student's best work, give honest feedback, and take their questions seriously.

Growth

Training is included

Training is included for everyone who teaches here. It takes place at several points during the year, and your Lead coaches you along the way. You'll learn how to tell when a student is ready for a new lesson, how to teach a short, clear lesson, and how to keep simple records of what each student has learned.

Guides and Mentors who want more responsibility can grow into a Lead role.

Questions

Frequently asked

Do I need Montessori certification?

No. Montessori training or experience is a plus for the Elementary Lead role. Training in how we teach is included for everyone.

Do I need a teaching degree?

Not for the Elementary Guide or Mentor roles. Mentors bring depth in their subject from study, work, or both. The Lead roles ask for classroom teaching experience.

How do part-time hours work?

You set your hours with our Director of Operations at the start of each cycle, based on the sessions and support your role needs.

What checks are required?

Everyone who works here completes a background check, a drug screen, and employment verification, including references, before they start.

Where is the school?

All roles are in person at 13203 Gunsmith Drive, Manchaca, TX 78652.
